From Oil to Digital Painting and NFT
Welcome to my web site!
Here you will find mostly Digital Paintings and NFTs Artworks. I also exhibit Oil Paintings that I made years ago. I have recently added a new page dedicated to my NFTs which are sold on dedicated marketplaces.
Why did I switch from painting to digital painting in the 2010s?
Initially, my idea was to use digital tools to prepare my future oil paintings. Because the use of layers made the preparation of the work faster. This applied as much to the preparatory work of the drawing as to the choice of colors and the harmony of the whole.
I took me few years of practice before be able to use digital tools correctly. As a result, I started to create purely digital works of art, realized as an end in itself.
What held me back was that I saw the lack of physical support as a brake on sales. The paradigm was that I had to « print » my virtual works on a physical medium in order to be able to sell them. In doing so, the work of art lost its uniqueness. What was the solution?
Limited Editions and Certificates of Authenticity
An artwork that needs to be printable to be sold is what we usually called an “artist’s multiple”. In fact, the problem of the lack of uniqueness is actually the same when you make lithographs, bronzes, photographs… Artist’s Multiple Artworks must be sold in Limited Edition with a Certificate of Authenticity, nothing more.
As a result, my digital paintings are sold printed on an aluminum panel with a certificate of authenticity. The certificate is printed on the back with my signature, the number, the date… of the print. It is also printed on a piece of paper and shipped with the artwork. Each edition is limited to ten (10) prints.
What are Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and why do I use them?
But what if the collector only wants to purchase the digital version? At this point, you can easily imagine that I am not able to use a “printed” Certificate of Authenticity. It is exactly what a NFT allows an artist to do: to create and to register a Digital Certificate using the Blockchain Technology.
Forbes Advisor gives a very clear definition of what an NFT is: “An NFT is a digital asset that represents real-world objects like art, music, in-game items and videos. They are bought and sold online, frequently with cryptocurrency, and they are generally encoded with the same underlying software as many cryptos.”
In short, blockchain technology brings artists (and collectors) the ability to sell (buy) virtual works of art by recording the initial transaction (primary market) and the successive transactions (secondary market). In doing so, NFTs make it possible to create rarity for works that can be reproduced ad infinitum. Virtual Artwork sold throughout NFT is what it is called “Crypto-Art” or “NFTs-Art”.
